LA MIRADA, CA, APRIL 2, 2024 – Sentimental and packed with surprises. Evolving and ever-changing production. Downright entertaining fun! These are the prevailing impressions from DSB’s 15th Anniversary concert last Friday, March 29, 2024.
The La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts was the perfect venue to host such a celebrated event. A converted and restored movie theatre, the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts set the scene for an evening of nostalgia. An unexpected treat was in store for us early arrivals as DSB Co-founder, Jeff Vincent, introduced his seventeen-year-old daughter, Jenna Piemonte, as she took the stage to play a three-song set. “This is full circle for me,” said Jeff, while fighting back tears of immense pride. Along with guitarist and friend Annalaura Lyon, Jenna delivered two of her original songs titled World Changer and Shout. Both are currently available across popular music streaming platforms. She concluded with a cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain. As the two harmonized, one couldn't help but think, that often, the fruit does not fall far from the tree. It was a wonderful and uplifting performance and it lent itself perfectly to bringing on DSB.
Time and again, DSB delivers an energetic and uplifting performance. While flawlessly performing the Journey catalog, what struck me from the get-go was the increased production and the uptick in pacing by Juan and the boys. Some tunes purposely developed slowly and then resumed their familiar cadence, captivating us all the while. DSB even utilized musical bridges to connect one song to the next. This new performance style worked perfectly. It was a creative addition to the set as it kept the audience engaged while they glided swiftly from one song to the next, creating a musical cluster of sorts. The set list was packed, featuring some deep cuts and all of the standard favorites we have come to expect and enjoy were present.
Another poignant moment came when Juan was singing When You Love A Woman, and behind him, displayed on the screen, was a picture of long-time DSB Faithful, Rose Smith. Rose and Larry have been prominent fixtures throughout the years of DSB performances. I had the pleasure of visiting with Larry before the concert as he was in attendance, representing him and Rose. Sadly, Rose passed away this January. We love and miss you, Rose.
One has to marvel at the consistency and excellence of these amazing musicians. Many prior members have helped set the standard. Roger, Scotty, and Jeff each had their flair. But the current cast of Jay, Mike, Danny, Henry, and Juan, have carved their pitch, preserving the greatness that has become synonymous with DSB. There is no drop-off in performance, and because of that, there is no drop-off in expectations. I credit Juan and his perseverance in maintaining such a viable and entertaining product despite member turnover.
In one final twist to the evening, Juan began his closing remarks by stating, “Before we play the song you all want to hear, please find us and engage with us on social media.” With that, the group began playing the signature song and their namesake, Don't Stop Believin’. While the DSB Faithful love this song, everyone couldn't help but notice a glaring omission. “What about Separate Ways,” they wondered. No sooner had Don't Stop Believin’ concluded, when the words “Separate Ways” cinematically emerged in big bold letters above the band. Then, wham! Out came the opening notes of Separate Ways and once again, all was right in the Faithful universe! Leave it to DSB to change things up and keep even the longest-tenured Faithful guessing.
This was truly a monumental performance, worthy of the 15-year milestone it celebrated. With pitch-perfect delivery of all of the Journey tunes, each showcased and supported by updated and enhanced production, and the twists and turns to keep us all captivated, The 15th Anniversary concert was a big success. And DSB, once again, left everyone in attendance beholden to the phrase "Don't Stop Believing.”
A big congratulations to DSB! It is my hope we can all do this again to mark 20 years!
